Step 1: Install Device
- Select a proper place for the location of the meter and the MDT.
- Install the MDT device following appropriate local codes.
For pit meters, the Submersible MDT is needed. The Submersible MDT is designed to be mounted to the bottom of a plastic pit lid using screws through the two tabs, or with a waterproof adhesive. Please see a Vitality Representative for pricing and availability.
Step 2: Power Up Device
Power Supply
- MDT Device is powered by an on-board battery
Step 3: Wire Device to Meter
The MDT device requires 2 wire connections for its pulse inputs. The TW-160/165 and TW-170/175 models of MDT use the standard 5mm removable connector. The unit is designed to have the metering wires run between the batteries (as shown in the picture below) and through the hole at the bottom of the unit. When mounted vertically on drywall (recommended), this allows a good drip loop to be formed.
- Green is the COM or ground. This should be connected to the common or ground wire of the meter.
- White is the Pulse Signal. Connect this to the NC (normally closed) or NO (normally open) wire of the meter.
If it’s a reed-switch based water or gas meter, no polarity is required.
If it’s a Badger Recordall, or most electric meters, then the polarity of the wires is essential.
You can always test the MDT by shorting the wires connected to the COM and Pulse Signal a few times. Short the wires together by tapping the exposed ends together. Do this 5 times.**
** By shorting the wires together, you are simulating a pulse count and the MDT is incrementing those pulse counts. Contact Vitality and have a representative confirm that the pulses are being incremented. Example: Reading went from 1234 to 1239.
